南予医誌 Vol.19 No. 1 2019-52-Abstract In 2009, the World Health Organization prepared a surgical safety checklist to be com-pleted by doctors and nurses in operating theaters; our hospital in fact introduced such a checklist in 2008. However, after some years of experience, we became concerned that the checklist was not appropriate. We investigated differences between doctors and nurses in terms of evaluations of patient consciousness. Signicant differences were apparent in ve items dealing with when patients entered unconsciousness, and one item dealing with emergence from unconsciousness. A surgical safety checklist facilitates within-team com-munication; the appropriateness of such checklists in terms of ensuring patient safety must be continuously veried.
