南予医誌 Vol.17 No. 1 2016-52-Abstract Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare disease that presents as an acute abdomen and is most common in thin young women. Here, we present a case of SMA syn-drome in a young man of average size.A 19-year-old man presented to our emergency department because of sudden-onset post-prandial abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a dilated stomach and duodenum containing massive amounts of uid because of a narrow-ing of the third part of the duodenum between the SMA and abdominal aorta. These typical imaging ndings conrmed that he had SMA syndrome. We treated him with a nasogastric tube to decompress the stomach and duodenum. The patient responded well to treatment and was discharged from hospital without sequela. When encountering an acute abdomen in a young man of average size, physicians should still consider the possibility of SMA syndrome with the typical imaging ndings.(Nan-yo Med J 2016; 17: 46-52.)Superior mesenteric artery syndrome in a young man of average size: a case reportMiku NAKAGAWA1)2), Masakazu HANAYAMA3), Tsutao OKAMOTO3),Akira FUKUI4), Masahiko KANEKO2)1) Postgraduate Clinical Training Center2) Department of Hematology3) Department of Gastroenterology4) Department of RadiologyUwajima City HospitalGoten-machi, Uwajima, Ehime 798-8510, Japan
