南予医誌 Vol.17 No. 1 2016-24-Abstract It can be difcult to make a diagnosis using only stained body cavity uid cytology speci-mens. In such cases, a cell block can be made using a large sample and used to evaluate malignancy or benignancy and the organization type and primary site of cells based on their appearance using immunohistochemical stains. Cell blocks can be used to examine gene variation or the response to cancer chemotherapy. Additional studies are also possible in the future because the specimens can be saved semi-permanently. Since the cell block proce-dure was listed in the revised medical treatment fees for 2016, it is being used more widely.(Nan-yo Med J 2016; 17: 16-24.)The usefulness of cell blocks in body cavity uid cytologyYasuhiro KAN1), Kenji NAKAGAWA1), Mamoru NAKANISHI1)Shoichi MATSUKAGE2)1) Department of Clinical Laboratory2) Department of Pathological DiagnosisUwajima City HospitalGoten-machi, Uwajima, Ehime 798-8510, Japan
