永岡、他:胸部外傷後の続発性膿胸南予医誌 Vol.16 No. 1 2015-73-Abstract An 82-year-old man with trauma to the right chest was admitted to the hospital with fractures of ribs 7–11 on the right side. He was discharged after 6 days of hospitalization. However, 30 days after the injury, he was admitted again with dyspnea and was diagnosed with a delayed hemothorax. He was treated with a chest tube drain, which was ineffective. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed acute empyema from a residual hemothorax. He underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic chest drainage on day 11 after ad-mission and was discharged on postoperative day 6. A hemothorax after chest trauma can result in acute empyema, which is often difcult to treat. Early discharge of acute empyema cases and surgery has been reported, and an early operation after the diagnosis was consi-dered to have led to the early discharge.(Nan-yo Med J 2015; 16: 67-73.)Early recovery after surgery for empyema with a delayed hemothorax due to chest traumaTomoyuki NAGAOKA11), Katsuhiro TOMOFUJI1), Yusuke NAKAGAWA1), Tomoaki OKADA1), Tatsuo YAMAUCHI1), Yoshinori IMAI1), Taro NAKAMURA1), Hidenori KIYOCHI1), Kenzo OKADA1), Shinsuke KAJIWARA1), Naoki ISHIDA2), Toshihiko SAKAO2)1) Department of Surgery2) Department of CardioVascular SurgeryUwajima City HospitalGoten-machi, Uwajima, Ehime 798-8510, JAPAN
