Abstract Background: Patients with foreign bodies lodged in the gastrointestinal tract are often seen in hospital emergency departments. Here, we reviewed the clinical characteristics of these cases and identied the risk of complications. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 54 cases admitted to Uwajima City Hospital between January 2007 and December 2014, in which a foreign body was endos-copically removed from the upper gastrointestinal tract. We analyzed patient age and sex, complications, history, type and location of the foreign body, endoscopic device used, and clinical course. Results: Most foreign bodies were sharp objects, including dental prostheses in 10 cases, press-through packaging in seven, and sh bones in seven. The foreign bodies were lodged in the esophagus in 28 cases (52%) and in the stomach in 24 (44%). The foreign body was a sharp object in nine cases with complications. All complications resulted in a curable esophageal rupture. Conclusion: Most foreign bodies lodged in the upper gastrointestinal tract were sharp ob-jects. Care should be taken in patients treated 24 h after accidentally ingesting a foreign body.(Nan-yo Med J 2015; 16: 36-42.)Clinical study of foreign bodies in the upper gastrointestinal tractMasakazu HANAYAMA, Atsushi YUKIMOTO, Yu HASHIMOTO, Yosiyasu OBATA, Yosiyasu KISAKA, Aki HASEBE, Tsutao OKAMOTO, Mikio ICHIKAWADepartment of gastroenterology, Uwajima City HospitalGoten-machi, Uwajima, Ehime 798-8510, Japan
