南予医誌 Vol.15 No. 1 2014-32-Abstract Compliance with medication is essential for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Espe-cially in patients suffering from chronic cardiovascular diseases, it is not unusual for various kinds of drugs to be prescribed and for drugs or dosages to be changed later, depending on the patients' condition. In addition, most of the patients are old, and some are living alone or in an aged household. Our inquiry revealed that patients had difculties in taking oral medicine correctly after their discharge from the hospital. For example, they forgot to take medicine or decided on their own to discontinue medication. Therefore, we decided to intervene in medication for patients older than age 65 with chronic cardiovascular diseases with a view to attaining self-supervised administration. We implemented the intervention by evaluating patients’ ability to manage their own medica-tion and choosing suitable approaches to medication based on a regimen comprehension scale developed in Japan (RCS). We established an indicator that patients who score 9 or over in the RCS can correctly manage their oral medicine by checking their administration practices.(Nan-yo Med J 2014; 15: 27-32.)An intervention by nurses in oral medication for elderly patients with chronic cardiovascular diseasesMayumi MATSUHIRA and Kayo YAMASHITADepartment of NursingUwajima City HospitalGoten-machi, Uwajima, Ehime 798-8510, JAPAN
